Greene rips GOP’s Cuomo unity push: ‘Are you kidding me?’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Tuesday criticized Republicans who have called for the GOP to unify around independent New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo instead of the party’s nominee, Curtis Sliwa.

“I’m amazed at how many Republicans have suddenly forgotten or completely don’t care that Cuomo killed elderly people in nursing homes by putting COVID patients IN the nursing homes and enforced some of the most insane Covid lockdowns in the country!” Greene wrote in a lengthy post on the social platform X.

“But are now saying the NY Republican mayoral candidate should drop out so that the literal COVID Communist, Cuomo, can win and become mayor of NY again,” Greene said.

While she did not name any Republicans in her post, billionaires Bill Ackman and John Catsimatidis have urged Sliwa to drop out of the race.

Greene added that she “can’t even imagine if my mother or father was murdered in a New York nursing home because of Andrew Cuomo putting Covid patients in the nursing homes and then telling me that I have to vote for him.”

“Are you kidding me?”

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) released a 2021 report with findings that said Cuomo understated the COVID-19 death toll in nursing homes by at least 50 percent, after mandating that retirement facilities admit all seniors who are “medically stable.”

Additionally, the Department of Justice opened an investigation into Cuomo over his pandemic-era nursing homes testimony to Congress, multiple outlets reported in May.

A spokesperson for Cuomo in a statement to The Hill on Wednesday denied any wrongdoing, saying the former governor implemented policies that fell in line with federal guidance and slamming Greene for suggesting otherwise.

“She doesn’t care about the future of New York City … she doesn’t have a vote in this race and clearly she is one of the national Republicans salivating at the prospect of having a pro-defund the police, pro-prostitution, and pro-abolishing jails Socialist as a national Democratic Party poster child to run against,” Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, said.

For months, polling among New York City voters has shown Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani with a comfortable lead over Cuomo. Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, has garnered support with a campaign platform that outlines plans for rent freezes, free buses and no-cost child care.

His proposed policies have earned ire from President Trump and his GOP allies. Some have pointed to Cuomo as a viable opponent with years of experience as both governor and state attorney general.
