Don’t expect any fast answers from the new House select committee on Benghazi, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on Thursday.
A day after Democrats made their appointments to the panel, Boehner stressed that the committee would need time to hire staff, pore over documents and decide what information it needed to gather before it even holds a public hearing.
{mosads}“I wouldn’t expect that you’re going to see a lot very soon,” Boehner said at his weekly Capitol press conference. “It’s going to be a while before we see a whole lot.”
Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and the top Democrat on the panel, Rep. Elijah Cummings (Md.), planned to hold an initial meeting “very shortly,” Cummings said on MSNBC on Thursday.
“We’re going to be going over what the aim of the committee is and what questions they’re trying to answer,” Cummings said on “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”
The House-passed resolution creating the committee gave no deadline for a final report, and lawmakers have said it could last well beyond the November elections.
