Conservative bloc elects new leader
Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas) was elected Tuesday as the next chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC).
{mosads}The Texas Republican prevailed over Rep. Mick Mulvaney (S.C.), a Tea Party favorite, on the second ballot. Flores’s fellow Texan, Rep. Louie Gohmert, was eliminated on the first ballot.
Flores succeeds Rep. Rob Woodall (Ga.), who agreed to finish the term of Rep. Steve Scalise (La.). The Louisiana Republican stepped down from the top RSC job this past summer, when he was elected majority whip.
Most Republicans in the House are members of the RSC, giving the group enormous power over legislation.
