Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will address a joint session of Congress on June 8, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Thursday.
Modi will become the first foreign leader to speak to lawmakers in the House chamber since Ryan became Speaker last October.
{mosads}Pope Francis addressed Congress in late September, fulfilling one of then-Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) lifelong wishes. The very next morning, Boehner announced he was resigning from Congress — a move that ultimately put Ryan in the Speaker’s office.
Modi’s visit “is a chance to hear form the prime minister on how we can work together to promote our shared values and to increase prosperity,” Ryan told reporters.
