Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said Monday that congressional efforts this week to fund the government could include appropriations for President Trump’s proposed border wall.
Sessions, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, acknowledged that putting the wall in a government funding bill would likely nix all Democratic support.
“It would be a Republican-only bill. I’d like to see us all fund the government. I’d like to see this be a circumstance once again where we understand what the wall would mean and where,” Sessions, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, said on CNN’s “New Day.”
Funding for Trump’s wall on the U.S.-Mexico border is central to the fight over spending to keep the government running. Democrats have said they will not vote for any funding bill that includes the wall.
{mosads}Lawmakers have until Friday at midnight to pass legislation and avoid a government shutdown.
Sessions noted that he has yet to see a plan for the border wall from the White House or Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, but said Republicans are committed to border security.
“We don’t know enough about the actual plan, even though Republicans at least are for securing our border,” Sessions said.
Trump in a recent interview refused to say whether or not he would sign a spending bill that does not include border wall funding, but Cabinet officials have insisted the administration will get money for the wall.
