House prepares to take concealed carry measure to floor

House Republicans are aiming to bring gun legislation that would increase concealed carry rights to the House floor in the near future. 

Republican leaders in the House took a whip count of the plan, known as the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, on Thursday.

Leaders felt the measure had enough support to bring to the floor. 

{mosads}The measure would allow licensed gun owners to carry their firearms in other states that have their own concealed carry laws.

The bill states gun owners can bring a firearm to any state as long as they have a permit, a photo I.D. and follow the state’s gun laws. 

The measure has support from the gun lobby, however, its opponents say it pushes back on states that would rather limit concealed carry. 

The bill would be combined with a bipartisan effort to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. 

The legislation comes amid a slew of recent mass shootings in the U.S. 

More than 50 people were killed in October when a gunman opened fire on a crowded country music concert in Las Vegas, while more than 20 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a Baptist church in Texas last month.
