Ellison mulling run for Minnesota AG: report
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) is mulling a run for Minnesota Attorney General, according to a report from Politico.
Four sources tell Politico that Ellison is considering the position. He would replace Minnesota’s current attorney general Lori Swanson, who is thought to be a gubernatorial hopeful in the state.
The Hill has reached out to Ellison’s office for comment.
The report comes after Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) replaced former Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) as senator late last year following Franken’s resignation over sexual misconduct. {mosads}
In addition to his post in the House, Ellison also serves as the deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
The attorney general post would put Ellison alongside other state attorney generals, such as Xavier Becerra (D) in California, who have opposed the Trump administration on a slew of legal issues.
Ellison has until Feb. 6 to declare his candidacy, unless Swanson delays announcing her reported gubernatorial run.
