Dem lawmaker: Trump is vandalizing our democracy

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) said the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is part of President Trump’s efforts to “vandalize our democracy.”

“McCabe’s dismissal in the dead of night is a disgrace to this country and our law enforcement community,” Pascrell tweeted. “Every day they vandalize our democracy and harm our institutions, and @HouseGOP does nothing.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on Friday night, saying the former No. 2 FBI official wasn’t forthcoming with investigators and had made an unauthorized disclosure to the media.

McCabe claimed that he was fired in an effort to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller, saying he was authorized to share information with the media.

Sessions fired McCabe two days before the top FBI official was scheduled to retire, as he became eligible for his pension after working for the FBI for more than 20 years.

McCabe had already stepped down and was on leave amid pressure from Republicans and Trump, who had repeatedly attacked him and claimed he was biased against the president.

Trump celebrated McCabe’s firing on Twitter early Saturday, calling it a “great day for democracy.”
