Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said early Thursday that Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is leaving Congress in part because GOP leadership has reduced Washington to “shambles.”
“I think part of the reason he’s leaving is the way the GOP has run Washington over the years. It’s in complete shambles,” Schiff said on CNN’s “New Day.”
The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee added that pressure to “basically end the Russia investigation” was too much for Ryan to handle.

Ryan announced Wednesday that he would not seek reelection in November, throwing the House GOP leadership into question.
The Wisconsin Republican was facing a particularly well-funded Democratic opponent in Randy Bryce, a union ironworker who declared his candidacy last year.
President Trump praised the House leader on Wednesday after his announcement.
“Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be running for reelection, he leaves behind a legacy of achievement no one can question,” the president wrote on Twitter.
