After speech, GOP rep calls Macron ‘socialist militarist globalist’

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) blasted French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday as a “socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist,” as the French leader addressed members of Congress.

“French President is a socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist… the dark future of the American Democratic Party,” Massie tweeted.

Macron during a speech on Capitol Hill urged Americans to reject “isolationism” and warned that the international community would continue to evolve with or without the U.S.

He also took aim at a culture of “fear and anger” that has emerged in the U.S. and Europe, and called on Americans to turn away from “extreme nationalism.”

“Both in the United States and in Europe, we are living in a time of fear,” Macron said. “You can play with fear and anger for a time, but they do not construct anything. Anger only freezes and weakens us.”

The speech appeared, at times, to take subtle shots at President Trump, who has repeatedly criticized international agreements and traditional U.S. alliances, like NATO, as part of his “America First” agenda.
