GOP rep on North Korea: Trump methods ‘produce results’

Rep. Scott Taylor (R-Va.) said Monday that President Trump’s approach to North Korea may be “unorthodox” but has produced “results” as the administration prepares for a summit with Kim Jong Un.

In an interview with CNN’s “New Day,” Taylor said he is “certainly happy” about the progress so far, but is “cautiously optimistic about the prospects for peace” between North Korea and South Korea.

“You have to give credit where credit’s due. I understand that the president’s — the way that he does things sometimes are unorthodox, but clearly they produce results in some areas and this is certainly one of them,” Taylor told CNN’s Chris Cuomo.

Taylor’s remarks come several days after Kim crossed into South Korea for the first time, meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Kim during that meeting reportedly said he would give up Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons should the United States vow it won’t invade North Korea.

Trump administration officials on Sunday emphasized that they want to see concrete actions from North Korea.

The president on Monday proposed the South Korean border as a possible venue for the summit with Kim, though the White House has yet to provide additional details on the meeting.
