House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said Tuesday he believes the FBI acted properly with its use of an informant to speak with several members of President Trump’s 2016 campaign.
“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said on Fox News’s “The Story.”

Gowdy’s remarks come after he and other key lawmakers met with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last week to discuss the Russia probe as well as an FBI informant’s contact with several Trump campaign advisers during the 2016 presidential election.
The Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman said Wray and Rosenstein made it clear that the president was not the target of the department’s investigation.
“Chris Wray and Rod Rosenstein have at least made it clear to us Donald Trump was never the target of the investigation, he’s not the current target of the investigation. Now, keep in mind, that can all change depending on what a witness says, but as of now, I think Chris Wray and Rod Rosenstein are stunned whenever people think Trump is the target of their investigation,” Gowdy said.
Trump has claimed without evidence in a series of tweets that the FBI planted a mole in his campaign and sought to spy on his team for political purposes, claims that have been panned by critics.
