Gowdy: I have never met or spoken to Trump

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) on Wednesday said that he has never spoken to or met President Trump.

The congressman was responding to CBS News’s John Dickerson, who asked him why Trump continues to say the FBI placed an informant in his 2016 presidential campaign for political purposes.

“I don’t know. I’ve never met or talked to the president,” Gowdy said on “CBS This Morning.”

Gowdy was addressing comments he made on Tuesday, in which he said the FBI acted properly with its use of an informant to speak with various members of Trump’s campaign in 2016.

“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said on the Fox News.

Gowdy and other lawmakers met with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last week to discuss the Russia probe as well as an FBI informant’s contact with several Trump campaign advisers during the 2016 presidential election.

“When the FBI comes into contact with information about what a foreign government may be doing in our election cycle, I think they may have an obligation to run it out,” Gowdy said on CBS. “I think the FBI if they were at the table this morning, they would tell you Russia was the target, and Russia’s intentions toward our country were the target.

“The fact that two people who were closely connected with the Trump campaign may have been involved doesn’t diminish the fact that Russia was the target and not the campaign.”
