Hoyer hospitalized after pneumonia diagnosis

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) earlier this week was admitted to George Washington University Hospital with a case of pneumonia and remained hospitalized on Wednesday, Politico reported

Hoyer’s spokeswoman, Katie Grant, said in a statement that he was diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia. According to Grant, he is being treated with antibiotics and “is expected to make a full recovery quickly.”

Hoyer checked in to the hospital on Tuesday after campaigning over the weekend with Democratic incumbents and candidates in Illinois and Wisconsin. He also attended several policy events in Chicago and elsewhere.

“He looks forward to being back at work very soon,” Grant said.

The 79-year-old has been the No. 2 House Democrat since 2003. He has indicated he hopes to throw his hat in the ring as leader of the caucus when House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) retires.
