Trump says he knew Ocasio-Cortez would win

President Trump claimed Thursday that he knew New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would win her primary earlier this year, a victory widely seen as a stunning upset.

“So I’m watching television and I see this young woman on television and I say, ‘who’s that?’” Trump said during an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday.

“Oh, she’s campaigning against Joe. You know who Joe is, right? Queens. Crowley. So, I say, ah, let me just watch her for a second. … Tell him he’s going to lose.”

Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political upstart, defeated longtime Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) in a June primary to represent New York’s 14th congressional district, which encompasses northwest Queens and the eastern Bronx.

Crowley, currently the No. 4 House Democrat, was widely seen as a potential future House Speaker before losing to Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist and former organizer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) presidential campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez won her primary while adopting a platform that called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), instituting single-payer health care and establishing “housing as a human right.”

Trump told Bloomberg on Thursday that despite his prediction about her win, he doesn’t agree with Ocasio-Cortez’s views.

“Her views are terrible,” he said.
