Top House Dems on investigative committees endorse Pelosi for Speaker
The top three Democrats on the House’s investigative committees endorsed Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for Speaker on Sunday.
“She’s got my vote. Nancy Pelosi has been battle-tested,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who is slated to become chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee next year, on ABC’s “This Week.”
“I have watched her — I’ve said it many times, she’s a phenomenal Speaker,” he said. “And now that we have all of these women coming into the Congress it would be a damn shame that you then replaced this fearless leader with a man.”
Cummings added that he looks forward to “working with [Pelosi] as Speaker.”
{mosads}”I’m going to vote for her and encourage all my colleagues to vote for her.”
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the soon-to-be chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, agreed with Cummings’s endorsement.
“We need the strongest general that we have. We need the best tactician. We need the best organizer,” Schiff told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And that’s her. There’s no one else, honestly, that comes close.”
The likely next chairman of the Judiciary Committee also echoed that endorsement.
“I think she’s one of the finest legislative craftspeople of our time,” Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” referring to Pelosi.
“Without her leadership, we wouldn’t have the Affordable Care Act, we wouldn’t have pre-existing conditions,” he said. “She most certainly has my support, I would do anything I can to make sure she’s the Speaker again.”
Pelosi has been working to become Speaker when Democrats take over the chamber next year, but has faced some opposition.
She has been more moderate on impeaching President Trump than some Democrats.
In an interview with The Atlantic published Sunday she said that she wants to see irrefutable evidence before she launches an impeachment effort so that Republicans would be on board.
