Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) is requesting a delay in the vote for the next Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) chairman because he is currently hospitalized.
Maloney, who earlier this month announced his bid to lead the House Democrats’ campaign arm, said in a statement that he would withdraw his candidacy if the vote is held this week as scheduled.
{mosads}”I had intended to stand for election to a leadership position this week, but life had other plans for me. I’ve always been blessed with good health, but this condition is going to require a few days of intensive treatment,” Maloney said.
“With deep respect for my supporters and colleagues, I felt it was improper to continue a leadership run at this time, unless the election can be postponed until a later date. I’ll be enthusiastically rejoining my colleagues soon to get to work on the important issues of the day,” he added.
Maloney was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in September that worsened over the weekend, sending him to the emergency room of the New York-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital on Sunday.
He returned home that night but checked into New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City on Monday at the direction of his doctors.
Maloney is one of four candidates running to be the next DCCC chair. Reps. Suzan DelBene (Wash.), Cheri Bustos (Ill.) and Denny Heck (Wash.) are also bidding for the position.
