House Ethics extends investigation into GOP lawmaker Garrett
The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday it would extend its probe into Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.).
Former aides accused the Virginia Republican of misusing staff for unofficial purposes. The staffers alleged Garrett and his wife tasked them with cleaning up after their family dog and picking groceries.
{mosads}Garrett — who announced in May he planned to retire at the end of his term to focus on battling alcoholism — adamantly denied the claims.
“The recent attacks on my family and myself were a series of half-truths and full lies,” he said earlier this year.
While the panel said it plans to further its investigation, it will only have until Jan. 3 before it loses jurisdiction over the matter when Garrett leaves Congress.
