Pelosi invites Trump to give State of the Union on January 29

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday formally invited President Trump to deliver the annual State of the Union address on Jan. 29.

“The Constitution established the legislative, executive and judicial branches as co-equal branches of government, to be a check and balance on each other. The Constitution also calls for the President to ‘from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union,'” Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump.

Trump’s past addresses before Congress were filled with Republican majorities cheering his remarks. But this year, Trump is sure to face more lawmakers staging protests, greeting his words with stony silence or possibly outright jeers.

A State of the Union address on Tuesday, Jan. 29 would also potentially come amid an ongoing government shutdown, unless Trump and Democrats reach an agreement before then.
