GOP rep unveils resolution seeking congressional term limits
Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (R-Ind.) reintroduced a resolution that would amend the Constitution to impose term limits on Congressional lawmakers.
The measure would restrict lawmakers from serving more than four terms in the House and more than two terms in the Senate.
{mosads}Members appointed to fill a vacancy or who won during a special election would not have their first term counted under the resolution.
Two-thirds of both chambers would have to pass the measure and at least 38 states would have to ratify it for it to become law.
Hollingsworth, who introduced the same legislation during the 115th Congress, argues term limits would help tamp down abuse of power in Washington.
“In the chaos and dysfunction in Washington, the interests and livelihoods of Hoosiers – and all Americans – are coming second to the self-interests, social media followings, and financial futures of far too many Members of Congress,” he told The Hill in a statement.
“The hardworking men and women who sent us here to represent them in Washington deserve a government that puts them, their families, their businesses, and their futures first.”
Other members have expressed support to similar proposals.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) recently introduced legislation that would limit senators to serving no more than two six-year terms and House members no more than three two-year terms.
