DC mobile billboard takes aim at Speaker Johnson’s abortion record

A mobile billboard in D.C. took aim at Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) abortion record as he started wrapping up his first full week as the leader of the lower chamber. 

Free & Just, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, sponsored a mobile billboard that is scheduled to go around Capitol Hill and D.C.-area college campuses from Wednesday to Friday, calling the Speaker out for his abortion record. 

The billboard is moved on a truck, and it features the Louisiana lawmaker’s face colored mostly in red and a slogan that says “Extremely Dangerous For Women.” 

“Mike Johnson’s record speaks for itself,” Chrystian Woods, campaign director for Free & Just, said. “Now that Mike Johnson has become Speaker of the House, we are putting him on notice that we will not sit back and watch him roll back our freedoms.”

Woods said the nonprofit is using the mobile billboard campaign to ask Americans to call the newly elected Speaker and “tell him that Americans support abortion access.”

The billboard will tour Capitol Hill and pass by schools such as American University, Howard University, Georgetown University and the George Washington University. 

The organization wants to highlight Johnson’s record and views on abortion. 

The nonprofit is taking aim at Johnson for celebrating the overturning of Roe v. Wade and for his hopes to get the state of Louisiana to zero abortions. The organization criticizes the Speaker for supporting a national abortion ban and for introducing legislation to restrict access to abortion care. 

Free & Just is also going after the Louisiana lawmaker for welcoming a law in his state that would punish abortion care providers with “a 1-10 year imprisonment and a $10 to $100k fine.” Johnson has also called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood. 

The Louisiana congressman has said that a “child in the womb” is a “unique human being with unique DNA” from conception, according to CBS News.

The congressman served previously on the House Judiciary Committee, but as Speaker, he can now determine if any abortion-related legislation will make it to the House floor.
