The House passed a resolution on Monday honoring Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), who died Sunday, by unanimous consent.

{mosads}The lower chamber adjourned in a further mark of respect for the North Carolina Republican, who passed away on his 76th birthday. Under the resolution, members were also appointed to represent the House at his funeral, which is slated to take place in his home state on Thursday.

Jones, who was first elected in 1994, was known for his sharp criticisms of the war in Iraq and willingness to buck leadership on a number of key issues.

He had been absent from Congress since September and entered into hospice care at the start of the year after sustaining a hip injury.

A special election is expected to be held later this year.
