Rep. Bush to House members who voted to censure Tlaib: ‘History will prove you were wrong’

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) slammed her colleagues who voted to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) on Tuesday over her comments on the Israel-Hamas war that sparked criticism on both sides of the aisle.

“Shame on every Member who voted to censure @RepRashida. 10,000 Palestinians have been killed, including 4,000 children, & your focus is on trying to silence the only Palestinian-American in Congress. History will prove you were wrong,” Bush wrote Wednesday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The House voted to censure Tlaib on Tuesday night for her criticism of Israel in the days and weeks following Hamas’s deadly attack on the country. Twenty-two Democrats bucked their party leadership and voted to censure the Michigan Democrat, while four Republicans voted against it.

The censure resolution, sponsored by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.), accused Tlaib of “promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel,” a reference to her use of a controversial phrase on social media.

The reprimand comes as Tlaib is facing another controversy over a video she posted on X that said President Biden “supported the genocide of the Palestinian people” and included clips of protesters chanting “from the river to the sea,” which the Anti-Defamation League characterizes as antisemitic.

Like Tlaib, Bush has also been outspoken about the unfolding situation in Gaza that has left thousands of Palestinians dead in the wake of Israeli airstrikes. Israel has increased its bombardment in the territory in the weeks since the militant group Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing more than 1,400 Israelis.

Bush led a coalition of progressive representatives to call on Biden to work toward an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hamas last month. She has also faced criticism for her statements calling for an end of United States support for Israel.

Bush reiterated her support of Tlaib in a separate post on X on Wednesday.

“@RashidaTlaib stands for all humanity. She isn’t a danger to anyone. But yesterday you further endangered her and attempted to silence her. All because she dares to speak up for the humanity of Palestinians, for children, for her family. It’s shameful,” Bush wrote.
