Florida Democrat posts joking ‘in memoriam’ video for Santos, McCarthy

Then-Rep.-elect Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) participates in the office space lottery draw for the 118th session of Congress on Friday, December 2, 2022.

A Florida congressman posted a joking “in memoriam” video featuring former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) Friday.

“IN MEMORIAM: ‘To all the Members of Congress who are leaving us too soon. They are gone but not forgotten,’” Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) captioned the video, which he posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter Friday afternoon.

The video, set to Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel,” features black and white photographs of Santos, McCarthy and Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.). McCarthy and McHenry both announced their coming departures from the House this week. The California Republican is leaving the House at the end of the year, while his North Carolinian colleague is leaving at the end of his term.

McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House in history to be pushed from the position back in October. McHenry gained notoriety in the wake of McCarthy’s ouster due to serving as Speaker pro tempore in the time that followed.

“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office. The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders,” McCarthy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Wednesday.

Santos was expelled from Congress last week via a bipartisan vote. The controversial former New York congressman’s time in the House ended in the wake of a damning report from the House Ethics Committee that said there is “substantial evidence of potential violations of federal criminal law” on Santos’ behalf.

“The House voted — that’s their vote,” Santos said after it became clear he was ousted. “They just set a new dangerous precedent for themselves.”
