Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who became the center of controversy over her rhetoric earlier this year, on Tuesday called for accountability for Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) after he quoted Adolf Hitler on the House floor.
“This is repulsive! Let’s see what accountability looks like for this member of Congress,” Omar tweeted Tuesday.
Brooks earlier on Tuesday took to the House floor to condemn Democrats and the media for their “big lie scam” following the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, which found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Hitler wrote about the “big lie” theory in his 1925 autobiography, “Mein Kampf.”
{mosads}“America must reject [Democrats’ and the media’s] ‘big lies’ or succumb to the danger that lurks and horrific damage that results,” Brooks said. “If socialists in the fake news media had any honor, they would cleanse their souls and atone for their sins by uttering mea culpas.”
“More likely however, they will double down and propagate even more big lies. Because doubling down is central to big lie theory,” he added. “In that vein, I quote from another socialist who mastered big lie propaganda to a maximum and deadly effect.”
He went on to quote directly from “Mein Kampf” but did not indicate approval of Hitler’s words or actions.
Omar earlier this year sparked a political firestorm when she said support for Israel in Congress is “all about the Benjamins” and suggested groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee push for “allegiance to a foreign country.”
The Minnesota Democrat was subsequently the unnamed subject of two House resolutions condemning anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination after people accused her of drawing on historical anti-Semitic tropes.
Some in the progressive wing of the Democratic party defended Omar as pointing out pro-Israel lobbying groups’ power, while Republicans demanded she be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
