Baltimore mayor: Trump should send help instead of ‘childish’ tweets

Baltimore Mayor Bernard “Jack” Young (D) on Monday said that President Trump should send federal assistance to Baltimore and other cities in need instead of sending “childish tweets.”

{mosads}”If he really wants to, he needs to send us the federal assistance — not only to Baltimore, to cities around this country that are in the same situation that Baltimore is in — but he’s so interested in childish tweets,” Young said in an appearance on CNN.

“I mean, if you want to help us, help us. Don’t talk about it, send the resources we need to rebuild America,” Young added. “He’s talking about he wants to ‘make American great again.’ Put the money in the cities that need it the most and that way you can make America great again.”

Young’s comments come after Trump slammed House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Twitter early Saturday as a “brutal bully,” claiming the longtime congressman’s Baltimore district is “FAR WORSE” and “more dangerous” than the southern border.

Cummings responded to Trump later Saturday, tweeting, “Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors.”

“It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch,” he tweeted. “But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

Young blasted Trump’s comments on Saturday, calling the president a “disappointment to the people of Baltimore.”

Trump has continued to launch attacks on the Maryland congressman, tweeting Monday: “25 years of all talk, no action!”

Young, who took over as mayor in early May after Catherine Pugh stepped down amid scandals and investigations, said in his CNN appearance that Trump has “never” reached out to him during his mayoral tenure, adding that “we’re still waiting” on a campaign promise to address infrastructure in the city.

“We have an aging infrastructure in the city of Baltimore, but for an unfunded mandate by the EPA for us to correct it and we have to constantly raise water rates on the poor people of the city of Baltimore,” Young told CNN.

Trump’s tweets also followed recent posts by the president in which he said four minority congresswomen should “go back” to where they came from, despite that they are all U.S. citizens. The House voted earlier this month to condemn those remarks as racist.
