Tlaib tells Walker to ‘shush’ over swipe at Sanders event

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) hit back at former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) after he mocked the backdrop she and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) used during a Sanders campaign event in the Detroit area.

“Anyone notice the backdrop behind @BernieSanders and @RashidaTlaib looked like the empty shelves of grocery stores in many socialist countries? Irony,” Walker tweeted, including a photo of a Soviet grocery store.

{mosads}“Shush, you’re embarrassing yourself,” the Michigan congresswoman responded.

The event Walker tweeted a photo of was from the Brightmoor Connection Food Pantry on Detroit’s West Side, which the two visited to highlight its low supplies of bottled water.

“Here in this campaign, we hear the word socialism a lot. Well, what this is a perfect example of is socialism for billionaires, massive amounts of subsidies and tax breaks,” Sanders said at the food pantry, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“But for children, there’s not enough money for a decent education and for poor people, there’s not an ability to get clean drinking water,” he added.

Tlaib, the third member of the “squad” of progressive freshman congresswomen to endorse Sanders for president, appeared with the Vermont senator at the Sunday event, which also included a rally at Cass Technical School, and credited him for defending her and her fellow congresswomen amid attacks by President Trump earlier this year.

“I think Amo Bernie, when he saw just not myself but my other sisters in service being attacked by this president, this bully, for him there was no hesitation. He jumped on board and said, ‘what can I do to uplift you all? What can I do to support you all?'” Tlaib said in the video, using an Arabic honorific meaning “uncle.”

“He truly believes that women like us, women that this institution hasn’t been ready for, that [it’s important that] we feel supported,” she added.
