House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) said on Sunday that there will be public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump “very, very soon.”
“There will be public hearings very, very soon. This week, we’re having the last of the witnesses come in, and then … the transcripts will be released,” Engel said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”{mosads}
{mosads}He also dismissed Republican complaints that the process has not been transparent, saying that they “keep moving the goal post.”
“The Republicans keep moving the goal post. They tell us they want us to be transparent. When we’re transparent, it’s not good enough,” Engel said.
Republicans in recent weeks have complained about the closed-door nature of the witness depositions in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. A group of them recently stormed the secure facility where interviews were being conducted.
Democrats have defended the process, pointing out that Republicans on the three panels conducting the inquiry — Foreign Affairs, Intelligence, and Oversight and Reform — are permitted to be part of the depositions and question witnesses.
