GOP lawmaker: ‘Amazing’ Democrats would ask if Founding Fathers would back Trump impeachment

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) ripped Democrats for asking a witness whether the nation’s Founding Fathers would back President Trump’s impeachment, expressing his amazement they would ask such a question.

“This just keeps getting more amazing,” said Collins, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.

“I think we just put into the jury pool the Founding Fathers and said ‘What would they think.’ I don’t think we have any idea what they would think, in all due respect, with this,” Collins said.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) had questioned Harvard University law professor Noah Feldman on whether he believed the Founding Fathers would have viewed Trump’s actions as impeachable.

Feldman answered that he believed “the Framers would identify President Trump’s conduct as exactly the kind of abuse of office, high crime and misdemeanor, that they were worried about, and they would want the House of Representatives to take appropriate action and to impeach.”

Collins strongly objected to Feldman’s comments and Nadler’s question. 

“To in some way insinuate on a live mic with a lot of people listening that the Founding Fathers would have found President Trump guilty is just simply malpractice with these facts before us, that is just simply pandering to a camera, that is simply just not right,” Collins said.
