Rep. Jim Hagedorn (R-Minn.) announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Hagedorn said in a statement that he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in February 2019. The congressman also said he plans to run for reelection in 2020.

“Today, one year later, I am happy to say I feel great and continue to perform my job in Congress unimpeded. I have not missed even a single vote due to illness,” he said

“I will keep fighting cancer and fighting for America and the people of southern Minnesota,” he added.

The Minnesota Republican, elected in 2018, posted his statement on Twitter, saying he’s “feeling great” a year after the unexpected diagnosis during a physical examination.

“Hopefully my situation will help others realize that in today’s world of medical innovation, it is possible for folks fighting serious illness to live virtually normal lives, continue working their jobs and maintain hope for a bright future,” he said.

His doctor, Lance Pagliaro, said in a statement that the congressman “has responded well to immunotherapy, which has been key to his recovery.”

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) commended Hagedorn, saying he has the backing of colleagues on Capitol Hill.

“It is totally in keeping with Jim’s character and track record that he has been working so effectively while battling cancer at the same time,” she said in a statement obtained by The Hill. “House Republicans are united in our full support for him and his family.”

Hagedorn is not the only congressman diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) announced in December that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
