House GOP releases 2025 legislative calendar
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the schedule for the 119th Congress on Tuesday, unveiling adjustments under President-elect Trump.
Next year, representatives will be in session for 34 weeks and maintain a maximum four-day work week.
The lower chamber will elect a Speaker on Jan. 3, after the new Congress is sworn in. Republicans have informally decided to reinstate House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), which will likely occur if GOP members turn out in their majority to affirm his position with a vote.
In the first quarter, the House will be in session all but three weeks. With Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, and Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, the agenda is likely to be full.
In line with tradition, lawmakers will spend the entire month of August in their jurisdictions and make their way back to the Capitol after Labor Day. Before that break, the calendar has the House with only seven weeks of district work.
Lawmakers return to the House for three weeks before a weeklong break that includes the start of Jewish fall holidays, Rosh Hashanah. It’s a district week that comes days ahead of the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.
Scalise’s schedule shows the House will be in session on Sept. 29 and 30 ahead of a recess for those who observe the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
November is a light month, with two weeks in session, and then three more weeks in December to close out the first half of the 119th Congress.
