Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) slammed Republicans for trying to “undo” the Affordable Care Act by rushing a confirmation vote for Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s pick to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Democrats are seeking to make the heathcare law a key issue in the confirmation debate and in an election that is just weeks away.
“What I am concerned about is anyone that President Trump would have appointed is there to undo the Affordable Care Act. That is why he’s in such a hurry,” Pelosi said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider a challenge to the law near the election, and Democrats predict Coney Barrett will vote against former President Obama’s signature law.
The House approved a measure to repeal ObamaCare when it was in GOP control in the first year’s of Trump’s presidency, but it did not pass the Senate.
The Trump administration is now backing a legal challenge to the law brought be the state of Texas.
Beyond the healthcare law, Pelosi said she was also concerned that adding Barrett to the court could lead to a decision that would overturn abortion rights, an argument Democrats are focused upon as the battle over Trump’s pick kicks into gear.
Democrats believe the issue of healthcare helped them retake the House majority in 2018, and that the GOP efforts to overturn Obama’s healthcare law hurt that party.
On Sunday, Pelosi said the issue will be even more front and center amid the coronavirus pandemic.
