Best Buy joins list of companies suspending donations to lawmakers who challenged election results

Best Buy has joined the list of companies suspending donations to lawmakers that challenged the results of the 2020 presidential election.

“Best Buy has made the decision to stop providing campaign contributions to the 147 members of Congress who voted in objection to certifying the presidential election results,” the company said in a statement to The Hill.

The announcement comes as multiple corporations have cut off political donations either at all or to those who challenged the results after the breach of the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday that left five dead.

Thus far, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Marriott have decided to halt donations to members who voted against the 2020 election results. Meanwhile, BP, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Mastercard have stopped making political contributions to lawmakers of both parties.

Five people died last Wednesday, including a Capitol Police officer, after a mob of President Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the Electoral College Vote. Despite the riot, Congress ultimately certified the results.

While bipartisan lawmakers have placed the blame on the president for inciting the riot, others have also placed some responsibility on his GOP allies for repeating the president’s claims.

GOP Sens. Josh Hawley (Mo.) and Ted Cruz (Texas), for instance, have received bipartisan backlash for their roles in inciting the riot.
