Wyoming county votes to censure Liz Cheney for Trump impeachment vote

The Carbon County Republican Party in Wyoming voted unanimously to censure Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) for voting to impeach President Trump along with nine other GOP House lawmakers, Fox News reported.

“Representative Cheney has violated the trust of her voters, failed to faithfully represent a very large majority of motivated Wyoming voters, and neglected her duty to represent the party and the will of the people who elected her to represent them,” the party’s resolution stated.

Carbon County borders Colorado and is south of the city of Casper, Wyo. Its population is less than 20,000.

Cheney has faced criticism from conservatives for voting to impeach Trump for inciting the deadly riot at the Capitol.

Apart from the Carbon County Republican Party, the Wyoming GOP as a whole has reproached Cheney, referring to her actions as “a true travesty.”

Cheney has stood by her vote and expressed no regrets, and she’s won some support from fellow Republicans in Congress.

“It was an insurrection. It was an attack in the very heart of our republic,” Cheney said in an interview with the Casper Star-Tribune. “There are some things that must never be partisan. And the defense of our Constitution, the defense of this republic, the defense of the peaceful transfer of power, ensuring that the Constitution and the constitutional duties we all have are carried out must never be partisan.”

“There’s just simply no question. This was a vote that could not have anything to do with party or with politics,” Cheney added.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) on Twitter commended her, saying she had “a hell of a lot more backbone than most, & is a principled leader with a fierce intellect.”

“Liz should be commended, not condemned, for standing up in defense of the Constitution and standing true to her beliefs,” said Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas).

Others have called for her step down from House leadership. Sources close to the matter have said Reps. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) are being looked at to replace Cheney as House Republican Conference chair.
