Everytown calls on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to resign

The gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety called for Rep. Marjorie Greene (R-Ga.) to resign in light of allegations that she was involved in Facebook exchanges that denied school shootings.

The advocacy group, along with its grassroots networks Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, cited a Media Matters article that uncovered exchanges from 2018 in which Greene allegedly agreed that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting were not real or not done by the people arrested for them.

“Dangerous conspiracy theorists who peddle disinformation like Rep. Greene ever further damage the credibility of Congress,” Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, said in a statement. “Taylor Greene’s lies traumatize the survivors of shooting tragedies and put their safety in danger. She must resign immediately.”

When asked for comment, Greene’s office pointed to a tweet from the congresswoman criticizing Media Matters and saying it produces fake news. Additionally, her office pointed to a tweet from Jan. 19, calling gun-free school zones a failure.

Greene is the first sitting lawmaker Everytown has called on to resign. The group also argued that Greene’s language on the day of the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 incited violence.

Billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination last year, is a co-founder of Everytown and is the organization’s largest donor.
