California Democrat renewing push to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene

A California Democrat is renewing his push to expel Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) over her reported support for an “America First Caucus.”

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) told Forbes that he is seeking support for a resolution to expel Greene following news that she and other far-right lawmakers considered launching the caucus, which would have served as an anti-immigration and pro-Trump group in the House.

“We’re gonna try to use that as a way to get more people,” he told Forbes of the resolution and the “America First Caucus.”

Greene has publicly derided reports that she planned to launch a new caucus, calling herself a proud member of the House Freedom Caucus. Still, her own communications aide, Nick Dyer, told Punchbowl News earlier this month: “Be on the look out for a public release for the America First Caucus platform when it’s released publicly very soon.”

Dyer explained that reversal in an email to The Hill on Wednesday, contending that the America First Caucus effort was planned by aides and outside advisers without the congresswoman’s knowledge.

“I’ve owned up to my mistake, Congresswoman Greene had ZERO knowledge of the planning proposal from the outside group. Our office is focused on MTG’s resolution to expel Democrat Maxine Waters for inciting Black Lives Matter terrorism against National Guardsmen in Minnesota,” he said.

Gomez’s previous attempts to expel Greene have seen little support from Democratic leadership, which favored stripping her of committee assignments instead.

In order for the resolution to be successful, dozens of House Republicans would have to vote for the measure, making its passage unlikely. Just 11 Republicans voted to strip Greene of her assignments earlier this year.

The first-term Georgia congresswoman has sparked controversy since before she took office in January due to her past support for the QAnon conspiracy theory as well as other unfounded claims about President Trump’s 2020 election defeat.
