Cheney on fist bump with Biden: ‘We’re not sworn enemies. We’re Americans’

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) responded to her critics who slammed her for giving President Biden a fist bump before his address to Congress on Wednesday.

I disagree strongly w/@JoeBiden policies, but when the President reaches out to greet me in the chamber of the US House of Representatives, I will always respond in a civil, respectful & dignified way,” Cheney tweeted on Thursday.

“We’re different political parties. We’re not sworn enemies. We’re Americans,” Cheney added.

Cheney, the third most powerful Republican in the House, has been under fire by her own party for speaking out against former President Trump after the Capitol riot.

Trump has repeatedly called on Cheney to be voted out of office and her own state party censured her after her vote to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the riot.

Some Republicans, including Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., on Thursday criticized Cheney for fist bumping Biden.

“ ‘Republican’ warmonger Liz Cheney gives Sleepy Joe a fist bump after he delivered a radical socialist vision for the future of America. So glad she’s in the GOP leadership, I guess they wanted to be more inclusive and put Democrats in there too?!?” Trump Jr. tweeted.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), however, greeted Cheney before the speech. McConnell has stood by Cheney amid attacks by Trump and others in the Republican party.
