Scarborough: Trump’s tweets ‘inane, offensive’

MSNBC

Joe Scarborough on Monday argued President Trump’s “inane” and “offensive” tweets sum up his political career.

“So Donald Trump’s political career can neatly be summed up by this weekend’s torrent of inane, offensive, and at times dangerous tweets that were aimed at the NFL, the NBA, and a nuclear North Korea,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe.”

{mosads}His criticisms come after Trump spent the weekend doubling down on a suggestion Friday night that NFL owners fire players who kneel during the national anthem.

“If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!” Trump wrote on Twitter early Sunday.

Scarborough in his Monday morning monologue contended that Trump feeds off the “political tribalism” he fuels when he provides his base with red meat.

“Trump the vulgarian throws rhetorical red meat at his crowd. His base explodes in delight. His foes explode in fury. And both sides feed directly to the president’s crude plan to launch a mini culture war,” Scarborough said.

Trump’s Cabinet secretaries are “humiliating themselves” by defending Trump, Scarborough said.

“Now make no mistake, whether you love him or whether you hate him, Donald Trump thrives on this sort of political tribalism. His attacks against sports figures are going on while health care reform is hanging in the balance, about to die,” Scarborough added.

Trump on Friday called out NFL players for kneeling in protest when the national anthem was played. He said that owners should fire players who protested. He was speaking to a crowd in Alabama in support of GOP Sen. Luther Strange’s Senate bid.

Following the lashing out at NFL protestors, he faced a barrage of criticism from athletes across multiple sports, team owners and even the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, who said that Trump’s comments showed a “lack of respect for the NFL.”
