Conservative columnist Ann Coulter went after President Trump on Tuesday, saying his televised “DACA lovefest” in a meeting with lawmakers has hurt Trump more than any claim author Michael Wolff could make in his high-profile book.
Trump said Tuesday in a White House meeting that lawmakers should pass a “bill of love” to resolve the fate of young immigrants who benefit from the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump scrapped last year.
“I hope we’re going to come up with an answer for DACA,” Trump said Tuesday.
That prompted criticism from Coulter, a Trump supporter and immigration hard-liner.
“Nothing Michael Wolff could say about @realDonaldTrump has hurt him as much as the DACA lovefest right now,” Coulter tweeted, referring to the author of the controversial new book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”
The White House and Congress are under pressure to reach a solution on DACA. The immigration talks are tied to work on a government funding bill, with the government set to shut down if a deal isn’t reached by Jan. 19.
DACA, which expires on March 5, gives certain immigrants who were brought illegally to the United States as children the right to live and work in the country without fear of deportation.
Trump has said his promised wall on the southern border, which is strongly opposed by Democrats, must be part of any deal.
Coulter said in an earlier tweet Tuesday that the “DACA lovefest confirms a main thesis of Michael Wolff’s book: When Bannon left. liberal Dems Jared, Ivanka, Cohn & Goldman Sachs took over,” referring to former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon and Trump advisers Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump and Gary Cohn.
