Fox’s ‘Hannity’ is most-watched cable program in July

Fox News continued its command of the basic cable landscape in July by topping its competition in total viewers, with Sean Hannity leading the way in prime time.

Hannity and Tucker Carlson took the top-two spots overall in the cable news ratings race, delivering an average of 3.37 million viewers and 2.70 million viewers respectively in winning their respective timeslots of 9 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow continued to have MSNBC’s top-rated program, with the Oxford Rhodes Scholar registering an average of 2.67 million viewers per night in taking third place.

Laura Ingraham, coming off her highest-rated quarter since launching in October 2017, finished fourth overall while winning her 10 p.m. timeslot, averaging 2.61 million viewers per night and topping MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell’s 2.117 million viewers.

In the 25- to 54-year-old demographic that advertisers covet most, the top 5 rankings hold, with Hannity averaging 623,000 viewers in taking first in the category.

Carlson finished second with 524,00 viewers in the demographic, with Maddow third with 511,000, Ingraham fourth with 489,000 and Fox’s “The Five” rounding the category out with an average of 393,000 viewers.

Fox News was first in total viewers in basic cable, with MSNBC, Home and Garden TV, History Channel and USA Network comprising the Top-5.

Overall, when comparing the numbers of each major cable news network in prime time, Fox News won by averaging 2.41 million viewers to MSNBC’s 1.66 million and CNN’s 891,000.

Hannity’s coverage of President Trump’s announcement that Brett Kavanaugh would be his Supreme Court nominee was the highest-rated program of the month, delivering 5.8 million viewers. The staunch Trump supporter also topped Discovery Channel’s ratings juggernaut “Shark Week” with 3.15 million total viewers to Discovery’s 1.69 million during the week of July 23-27. 

The month was another active one on the political news front, dominated by stories about Trump’s Kavanaugh selection, the Helsinki summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, strong GDP numbers and the secret tapes of Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen.
