Kevin Spacey movie grosses just $618 in opening weekend

Kevin Spacey’s “Billionaire Boys Club” grossed just $618 over its opening weekend, easily an all-time low for the Oscar-winning actor, who faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

The film opened in just 11 theaters across the U.S., averaging $56 per location. The average movie ticket cost is about $9.27, according to a 2017 report by the National Association of Theatre Owners, meaning on average less than six people chose to see the movie at each venue.

Late last year, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making sexual advances more than two decades ago, when Rapp was 14.

{mosads}Spacey, 59, was also accused in November of sexual harassment by several co-workers on his Netflix political drama “House Of Cards.” He was quickly fired from the series and dropped by his talent agency. 

The Associated Press reported the same month that the Old Vic Theatre in London had received 20 allegations of inappropriate behavior against Spacey, who served as its artistic director for more than a decade.

Distributor Vertical Entertainment decided to release “Billionaire Boys Club” earlier this summer despite Spacey’s personal troubles and bad PR, asking the public not to allow one person’s behavior to “tarnish the release of the film.” 

“We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small, supporting role in Billionaire Boys Club — does not tarnish the release of the film,” Vertical said in a statement on June 19. “In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film.”

“House of Cards,” starring Robin Wright as Spacey’s fictional wife, returns later this year for its sixth and final season, its first without him.
