Fox News legal analyst: Trump tweets about indictments ‘fodder’ for Mueller probe

Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano said Tuesday that President Trump’s attacks against Attorney General Jeff Sessions over charges brought against GOP lawmakers are “fodder” for special counsel Robert Mueller. 

“When the president says these things … That is fodder for the cannon of Bob Mueller and the never-Trumpers and all those who wish the president ill,” Napolitano said on “Fox & Friends,” referencing Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s election interference and potential obstruction of justice.  

“He’s using his own words out of his own mouth to help put him in a box of the use of government for political purposes,” he added.

Napolitano also voiced strong opposition to Trump’s statements, saying that there can’t be two standards for the Department of Justice. 

{mosads}”It is the duty of the Justice Department to prosecute crimes when they find them and to bring indictments when a grand jury has decided there is enough evidence there.” 

His comments came a day after Trump railed against Sessions for investigations into a pair of Republican congressmen. He also suggested that the charges had endangered the GOP’s prospects in the midterm elections. 

“Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department,” Trump tweeted.

“Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff,” he added, before saying that “Democrats … must love him now.”

The tweet referred to Reps. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) and Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), two prominent Trump supporters who have been indicted on criminal charges in recent months. 

Collins is facing insider trading charges while Hunter has been indicted for allegedly misusing campaign funds.

Some GOP lawmakers criticized Trump for his attack. 

“The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice – one for the majority party and one for the minority party,” said Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) in a statement.
