Conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza on Tuesday celebrated his right to vote after President Trump earlier this year pardoned his felony conviction for illegal campaign contributions.
D’Souza shared a photo of himself with an “I voted” sticker in a tweet that mentioned Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who was reportedly involved in securing his pardon.
“Felons can’t vote. But pardoned ones can,” D’Souza wrote.
Trump issued a pardon in May for D’Souza, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to illegally using straw donors to support former Republican Senate candidate Wendy Long in 2012.
{mosads}The president argued at the time that the conservative commentator had been treated “unfairly” by the Obama administration.
“What should have been a quick minor fine, like everybody else with the election stuff,” Trump said. “What they did to him was horrible.”
“I never met him, I called him last night, first time I’ve ever spoken to him, I said, I’m pardoning you. Nobody asked me to do it,” the president added, despite D’Souza telling media outlets that Cruz had promised to raise the issue with him.
It wasn’t immediately clear where D’Souza planned to vote. He reportedly lives in New York and maintains a residence in California.
