Former RNC chair: ‘There is a difference between Republicanism and conservatism’ in age of Trump

Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele said Wednesday that “there is a difference between Republicanism and conservatism” under President Trump. 

“It’s big-government Trumpism,” said Steele, who has been an outspoken critic of the president, on MSNBC, when discussing how high the debt has risen under the GOP president.

The former RNC head said the president has “made the party more transactional.”

“There is a difference between Republicanism and conservatism as it is formed in the land of Trump,” he said.

Trump has broken with traditional GOP orthodoxy on a range of issues, from his open embrace of nationalism to his protectionist trade policies.

Many traditional conservatives have left the Republican Party entirely since the rise of Trump in the 2016 presidential contest, and others have declared themselves opposed to the president at every turn. Many Republicans, however, praise Trump for his “America first” policies and for what they describe as needed changes happening in Washington, D.C.
