Baltimore Sun Editorial Board lashes out at Trump: ‘Better to have a few rats than to be one’
The Baltimore Sun Editorial Board ripped President Trump as the “most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office” on Saturday in a scorching piece after Trump referred to Rep. Elijah Cummings’s (D-Md.) 7th Congressional District, which includes west Baltimore, as a “rat and rodent infested mess.”
In a scathing column, the editors of one of the country’s oldest newspapers wrote that Trump himself had more power to effect change in Baltimore than Cummings, whom Trump also targeted for criticism Saturday, and urged him to use the power of the presidency to do so.
{mosads}”We would above all remind Mr. Trump that the 7th District, Baltimore included, is part of the United States that he is supposedly governing,” the Sun’s editors wrote.
“The White House has far more power to effect change in this city, for good or ill, than any single member of Congress including Mr. Cummings. If there are problems here, rodents included, they are as much his responsibility as anyone’s, perhaps more because he holds the most powerful office in the land,” they added.
The editors then went on to launch into a full-scale attack on Trump, likening him to “vermin.”
“We would tell the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office, the mocker of war heroes, the gleeful grabber of women’s private parts, the serial bankrupter of businesses, the useful idiot of Vladimir Putin and the guy who insisted there are ‘good people’ among murderous neo-Nazis that he’s still not fooling most Americans into believing he’s even slightly competent in his current post,” they wrote.
“Or that he possesses a scintilla of integrity,” they continued. “Better to have some vermin living in your neighborhood than to be one.”
Trump’s attack on Cummings earlier Saturday came after similar attacks in previous weeks targeting minority Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.).
The House, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), largely condemned the president’s remarks and voted mostly along party lines to label them “racist.”
