Former Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C.) has returned to Fox News after ultimately not joining President Trump’s legal team as outside counsel, a network spokesperson confirmed to The Hill on Friday.

The news of Gowdy’s return first was reported by New York Times reporter Annie Karni.
Gowdy, a former prosecutor in South Carolina, was in discussions to join the president’s impeachment defense team starting back in October.{mosads}

Those discussions fell apart after federal lobbying rules mandated that Gowdy is not permitted to accept the job until January 2020.
The 55-year-old is a former chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and led the House Benghazi Committee, where he grilled former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other Obama administration officials in October 2015, over a September 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya.

Gowdy was originally hired as a Fox News contributor in January 2019.
