Briahna Joy Gray, national press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) presidential campaign, accused the hosts of ABC’s “The View” of mischaracterizing the diversity of Sanders’s supporters, describing a segment in which Meghan McCain said Sanders “has a problem with women” as “shameful.”

“More women have given to Bernie’s campaign than any other campaign. We have the most diverse, least white collation,” Gray tweeted Tuesday. “But the millionaires on the View openly smear the teachers, Walmart workers, and post office employees who form our base. Shameful.”

“The women of @TheView should consider having on one of the many women who make up Bernie’s 70% female leadership team,” she added. “Even better, they should have on one of the working class women whose interests they undermine by parroting baseless, long debunked talking points.”

Gray’s defense of Sanders comes after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) confirmed a CNN report that the Vermont senator had privately told her in a meeting that he did not believe a woman could be elected president.

Sanders has strongly denied making the comment. The hashtag “WomenForBernie” trended on Tuesday afternoon among Sanders supporters pushing back on the claims.
