“Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough slammed President Trump for his sardonic response to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) testing negative for the coronavirus, noting that a positive test for the 73-year-old Romney “could have been a death sentence for him.”
“This is really great news! I am so happy I can barely speak. He may have been a terrible presidential candidate and an even worse U.S. Senator, but he is a RINO, and I like him a lot!” Trump wrote of Romney to his more than 75 million followers.
“My god … Don’t you just ask yourself the question right now about his stability?” Scarborough’s co-host and wife Mika Brzezinski said in response to the tweet on Wednesday’s edition of the MSNBC morning program.
“Well, of course, Mika. We do every day,” Scarborough replied. “Mitt Romney is of the age that this could have been a death sentence for him.”
Older people who contract the coronavirus are more likely to die from it than younger people, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Overall, 31 percent of cases, 45 percent of hospitalizations, 53 percent of ICU admissions, and 80 percent of deaths associated with COVID-19 were among adults aged 65 years or older with the highest percentage of severe outcomes among persons aged 85 or older,” the report said.
Trump has swiped at Romney repeatedly in recent months, particularly after the Utah senator was the only lawmaker on the Republican side of the Senate to vote with Democrats to convict the president for abuse of power during the impeachment process earlier this year.
