MSNBC’s Chris Hayes shared on Twitter on Wednesday that he was “strictly forbidden” by his mother from watching “The Dukes of Hazzard” as a small child because of the Confederate flag displayed on the signature car in the series.
Hayes thanked his mother for that decision, saying, “Good work, mom!”
“Just remembered when I was little kid I was strictly forbidden from watching the Dukes of Hazzard by my mom because of the flag on the car. Good work, mom!” Hayes, 41, tweeted to his 2.1 million followers.
“The Dukes of Hazzard” was part of CBS’s dominant Friday night lineup when the show aired from 1979-1985 as the lead-in to the most-watched program in the country for several years, “Dallas.”
Hayes was born the year the show was launched.
After it went off the air in 1985, the show continued to run in reruns up until 2015, when TV Land announced it was removing “Dukes” from its airwaves after some complaints about the General Lee and its replica Confederate Flag.
