NBC’s Savannah Guthrie undergoing cataract surgery after being struck by 3-year-old’s train

“Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is undergoing cataract surgery on her right eye on Monday to address a blurry spot after her 3-year-old son accidentally hit her with a toy train last fall.

“It’s been a long time, I’m super excited,” the NBC anchor told viewers on Monday morning. “I feel like it’s Christmas morning because if they remove this cataract, I’ll really be able to see, and I’ve had a hard time seeing.”

Guthrie was supposed to have the surgery done earlier this year, but had to postpone it due to the coronavirus pandemic. She told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview last month that her vision has been blurred for months.

“It’s kind of distorted and then it’s got a wavy thing, and now I have this cataract, which is a big blurry spot,” Guthrie told the talk show host on June 17. “Once they remove that blur, I think it will be a lot better.”

“It’s kind of funny, kind of not. I see, but I see big, blurry spots,” she added.

Guthrie was named “Today” show host in 2012, replacing Ann Curry.
